      The egg of course! So the chicken had something to hatch out of.

      I agree with Emma – the egg! Chickens evolved from another species, so they would have started off as an egg that had a genetic mutation causing it to be the first true chicken.

      The egg. After all, dinosaurs laid eggs, and they were around quite a while before chickens.
