I’m quite early in my career. I’ve just finished my PhD, and this is my first position as a research assistance. Salaries for this position start at about £25,000. After a few years of experience, a talented researcher could look to earn between £35,000 and £55,000.
I don’t mind you asking at all, as you asked so politely! In fact I’m amazed nobody has asked this already!
I earn around £46.5k per year. This results in about £2600 in my bank each month. That possibly seems like a lot to you right now (maybe not! It still seems like a big number to me) but you should remember that I studied for a Bachelors degree for three years, an MSc for 1, spent two years on low pay in Australia, did a PhD for four years, and then started earning at around £27k per year – with some debt.
It’s not all about the money, but if you are thinking about a career in science, you are wise to ask!
